Voters in Union County will go to the polls Tuesday to help select the Democratic and Republican nominees for local, state and federal offices.

In Tuesday’s primaries, voters must choose either the Democratic or Republican ballots. If there is a runoff in any of those races on June 22, those who vote must again select the ballot of the party they chose in Tuesday’s primary. In the November general election voters are free to split their votes between the two major parties and any minor parties.

Democrats

Tuesday’s Democratic ballot features contested races for five county offices including:

• Union County Supervisor where incumbent Tommy Sinclair’s bid for a full term in his own right is being challenged by Mickey Gist and Ralph Tucker.

• Union County Probate Judge where incumbent Donna Cudd faces challenger Calvin Payton.

• Union County Auditor where incumbent Brad Valentine faces challenger Kelly Small.

• Union County Council District 1 where incumbent Joan Little faces challenger Richard Kelly.

• Union Council District 4 where incumbent Joey English faces challenge Ben Ivey.

The ballot also features races for two state and one federal office including:

• Governor — Robert Ford, Jim Rex and Vincent Sheheen

• State Superintendent of Education — Frank Holleman and Tom Thompson.

• US Senate — Alvin M. Greene and Vic Rawl.

Republican

The Republican ballot features no local races but does include six state and two federal races including:

• Governor — Gresham Barrett, Andre Bauer, Nikki R. Haley and Henry McMaster

• Lieutenant Governor — Ken Ard, Bill Connor, Eleanor Kitzman and Larry Richter

• State Treasurer — Converse Chellis and Curtis Loftis

• Attorney General — Robert Bolchoz, Leighton Lord and Alan Wilson.

• Comptroller General — Richard A. Eckstrom and Mike Mellinger

• State Superintendent of Education — Gary L. Burgess, Elizabeth Moffly, Brent Nelsen, Kelly Payne, Glenn C. Price and Mick Zais

• US Senate — Jim DeMint and Susan McDonald Gaddy

• Fourth Congressional District — Trey Gowdy, Bob Inglis, Christina Jeffrey, Jim Lee and David Thomas.

The Republican ballot also includes two advisory questions with the first asking voters if they agree that the General Assembly should make it illegal to force the public health insurance or comply with any natinoalized health care provisions not applied equally to all states. The second questions asks if they agree the General Assembly should limit state spending to the growth in the incomes of the state’s citizens plus inflation.

Voting Precincts

In most races, voters from throughout the county will have the opportunity to help select their respective party’s nominees. The exception are in the races for the Democratic nominations for District 1 and District 4. Only voters in those districts who choose the Democratic ballot will be able to vote in those races.

The voting precincts for Union County Council District 1 are Jonesville Box 1 and Kelton as well as parts of Bonham, Jonesville Box 2 and Lockhart.

The voting precincts for Union County Council District 4 are Adamsburg and Monarch Box 1 as well as parts of Bonham, Excelsior, Lockhart, Monarch Box 2, Santuc and Ward 1 Box 2.

Changes

Voters in three precincts will cast their ballots at a new location on Tuesday.

• Santuc — Salem Baptist Church Fellowship Hall

• Ward 2 — The old B&H Motors building at the intersection of SC 215 and US 176.

• Excelsior — The Union Masonic Lodge on the South Duncan Bypass.
