If you are looking for a fun-filled Friday night, plan to attend the 2010 Union County Relay for Life tomorrow (Friday, May 28) at Union County Fairgrounds.

The relay offers something for everyone while raising money for the American Cancer Society and awareness of cancer and cancer-related issues.

A special reception for cancer survivors will be held at the Union County Clemson Extension Office at 6 p.m. The reception is sponsored by Hospice Care of South Carolina and Augsburg Lutheran Church.

Union County Relay for Life will officially begin at 7 p.m. with an opening ceremony. Skydivers Mark Lancaster, Steve Vaughn and Gene Fulton will kick off the event upon landing by presenting scissors to cut the ribbon for the first lap, which is the survivor lap. Next, the 32 participating teams will get behind their banners and display their themes in the team banner lap.

A wide variety of food will also be offered, such as hot dogs, hamburgers, funnel cakes, ribbon fries, barbecue, chicken strips, fish, baked goods and more.

“If you go out to eat on Friday nights, come join us,” said event co-chair Torrence Inman.

There will be no professional vendors, however, and all proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.

All ages are sure to be entertained as children’s activities such as slides and balloons will be on hand. Musical performances will also be featured at the relay. Nashville recording artist Jim Cole and one-man band Carl Brunson are each scheduled to perform.

A luminary service will be held around 9:45 p.m. at a special recognition of survivors and a remembrance ceremony. The service will include special participation by Jim Cole, Ronnie Lybrand, Robert Alexander and Allen Gregory.

After the luminary service, the festivities will continue with fireworks and music from Carl Brunson.

Another event that everyone is looking forward to is the “Miss-ter Universe Relay for Life 2010 Womanless Beauty Pageant” which promises to be hilariously entertaining for spectators and embarrassing for participants.

“It’s going to be at midnight so we can let it all hang out, so to speak,” Inman said.

The event will continue throughout the night and into the morning.

“We will continue to walk all night because cancer never sleeps,” Inman said.

He is happy with the fact there are nearly 700 participants and more T-shirt sponsors than ever before for this year’s relay.

“It is a celebration. It is a remembrance. It is a good time for everybody,” Inman said.
