ANDERSON — A Spartanburg man who bought a toy gun and mask from a store in Jonesville and then used them to rob a nearby bank is facing the possibility of 25 years in prison.

David Lee Glenn was convicted Wednesday in federal court in Anderson of armed bank robbery following a jury trial before Senior U.S. District Judge G. Ross Anderson Jr. Glenn faces a sentence of 25 years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000 followed by supervised release of five years. He will be sentenced at a later date after a presentencing report is completed by the U.S. Probation Office and submitted to Judge Anderson.

Glenn’s conviction was announced Thursday by U.S. Attorney William N. Nettles. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeanne Howard.

The robbery began at 9:39 a.m. Oct. 30, 2009, when Glenn entered First Citizen’s Bank, 408 Pacolet St., Jonesville, wearing a “Scream” mask, rubber gloves and a hooded jacket. Glenn approached the teller carrying a yellow Dollar General bag in his hand and said "Put money in the bag. You better hurry up."

The teller, who saw what she thought was a handgun in Glenn's other hand pointed at her, complied with Glenn's demands by filling the bag with money. Glenn then fled the scene in a grey, older model 4-door Jeep Cherokee.

The case was investigated by the Union County Sheriff's office, Jonesville Police Department, Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In checking with the Dollar General store, investigators found that a man matching the description of the robber had purchased a "Scream" mask, gloves and a toy gun the morning of the robbery.

Surveillance photos from a nearby convenience store revealed a man matching the description of the robber entering the store and using the ATM machine.

Local media ran the surveillance photos from the convenience store and a caller identified the man at the ATM as Glenn.

A Union County Sheriff's deputy also found gloves like those worn in the robbery discarded on the side of the road about five miles from the bank. The DNA profile taken from the gloves matched Glenn's.
