Union man charged with disturbing schools

A man accused of repeated verbal assaults on staff members of an elementary school ended up under arrest and banned from all Union County schools.

Bobby Gray, 49, 218 Richard St., Union, is charged by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with disturbing schools.

The incident report states a deputy was dispatched to Monarch Elementary School in reference to a man causing a disturbance at the school. When the deputy arrived the principal told him she was in a parent conference with Gray and his wife. During the conference Gray became upset and began yelling at the staff. At one point he left the principal’s office and went into the main office where he again verbally assaulted staff members, this time in front of several students.

Gray then left the main office and walked across the hall to the lunch room where he verbally assaulted another school employee. This was also done in the presence of several students who were in the lunch room.

The report states while the deputy was interviewing witnesses Gray and his wife left and went to the the school district office. The deputy went there and placed Gray under arrest and transported him to the Union County Jail. At the request of a district official Gray was also put on trespass notice for all of the county’s schools.

Incidents

The following incidents are being investigated by the Union Public Safety Department:

Malicious Damage

Vandals did $67,500 worth of damage to a coin laundromat Tueday evening before running off when the owner arrived.

The incident report states the owner told the responding public safety officer he was driving past his business at 301 Hart St. around 6:30 p..m. when he saw a black male on top of one of the machines. He started to back up and two black males got into a black Honda Accord and drove off leving one black male still in the building. The victim said he was in the parking lot when the third vandal came out, went across the street to a house and spoke to a woman sitting on the porch. He said the vandal then ran around the back, jumped over a fence, got into the black Honda and drove off.

The officer interviewed the woman who said a black male had came to her and asked for a tool to change his flat tire. She said she told him she didn't have one. He then came back and asked for a flathead screwdriver and she said she didn't know if she had one but he could look in the garage. The woman said he then went to the laundromat and that was when he came running over and asked if she had seen a black Honda. She told him no and then he ran around the back, went over the fence and got in the car.

The items damaged in the business include seven washing machines, 11 dyers and one extractor. The report states the machines had been pried on and destroyed.

TV Stolen

Forgetting to turn off the power cost a man dearly this past weekend.

An officer was dispatched Tuesday morning to a residence at 309 Foster St. in response to a report of a break-in. The incident report states the officer was told by the victim someone broke into his house sometime between 8 p.m. Sunday and 6:20 a.m. Tuesday and stole his 62-inch Mitsubishi television. The victim explained he was in the process of moving and had the power turned off but forgot there was food in the refrigerator. The food went bad and, to air out the building, the victim said he left a side window up Sunday.

The report states the officer noticed a side window was open and the house had a sour smell to it. The officer also noticed the back door was open but did not see any sign of forced entry. The victim said the TV, which is valued at $5,000, was the only thing missing.

The following incidents are under investigation by the sheriff’s office:

Fraud

A woman reported that on April 27 someone cashed two checks totaling $633.28 on her and her husband’s checking account in Spartanburg. The woman said she contacted her bank, completed the fraudulent charge paperwork and is working with a credit bureau to correct the invalid charges.

The victim said the checks were in the 7000 range but she and her husband do not have any checks like that. She provided deputies with a copy of her electronic bank statement showing the two fraudulent charges and is working with her bank to obtain copies of the canceled checks.

Malicious Damage

A woman who left her car parked in her yard returned a day later to find it had been vandalized.

The incident report states the woman left her home at 161 Lawrence St., Carlisle, around 9 a.m. Monday and returned at 11:10 a.m. Tuesday. When she did she discovered someone had spraypainted her white 1999 Olds four-door causing $800 worth of damage.

Larceny

A deputy was dispatched to a residence on Maybinton Road in reference to the larceny of $150 worth of property.

The incident report states the victim told the deputy someone stole the items from his property at 1259 Maybinton Road. The theft, which occurred sometime between 8 a.m. Saturday and noon Monday, involved an old metal heater, a 100 gallon oil tank and a window air conditioning unit. The victim said he found the heater and air conditioning unit at a recycling business in Whitmire. He said he was going again to try and locate the oil tank.

Arrests

The following persons were arrested by the sheriff’s office:

Timmy Louis Peake, 40, 112 Laurens St., Union, charged Tuesday with fraudulent check.

Thomas Eugene Jeter, 51, 3117 Berry Farm Road, Carlisle, charged Tuesday with fraudulent check.

Shelly Kay Smith, 39, 125 Amber Drive, Lot 8, Union, charged Tuesday with fraudulent check.

The following person was arrested by the public safety department:

Donyell Byrd, 37, 125A Chambers Avenue, Union, charged Tuesday with disorderly conduct.
