Mr. Burgess was born in Gaffney, SC, Sept. 5, 1934, a son of the late James William "Bill" Burgess and Julia Hammett Burgess. He was a graduate of Gaffney High School and retired from Tietex in Spartanburg. Mr. Burgess was a member of Fairview Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class where he had perfect attendance for 47 years. He was a veteran of the US Army and was a former member of the South Carolina National Guard-Gaffney Unit. An avid hunter and fisherman, Mr. Burgess was also a friend to all who met him.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Melody Ann Burgess Carter and husband Perry Dean; two sons, William Carroll Burgess, Jr and wife Tammie and Clarence Lee Burgess and wife Kathy Farr Burgess, all of Union; a sister, Patsy Burgess Poole and husband Ray of Gaffney; six grandchildren, Billy Burgess, Katie Burgess, Andew Carter and wife Jinalee, Logan Carter, Kaitlyn Burgess and Anna Burgess and two great-grandchildren, Haleigh Burgess and Mason Carter.
Mr. Burgess was predeceased by a sister, Betty Burgess Martin.
Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Friday, May 7, 2010 at Fairview Baptist Church conducted by Rev. David Lewis, Rev. Guy Langston and Rev. Clarence Crocker. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Dennis Nix, Glenn Howard, Frankie Smith, Mike McClaine, Kenny Horne and Josh Williford.
The following are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers, Ken Tuck, Ron Gault, Halon Duckett, Steve Howard, Mike Carter, Ronnie Moore, Jamie Williford, Jerry D. Fowler, Jimmy Robinette, Jimmy Pierce and Dennis Carter.
Mr. Burgess will be taken to the home Thursday where the family will receive friends and will be placed in the church 3 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service.
