Blue Ridge defeated Union County 14-10 and 3-0 during a double header at the Timken Sports Complex. The two losses knocked the Lady Jackets out of the playoffs. Union County had beaten Blue Ridge twice in the regular season and once during post-season play.
The Lady Jackets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning during the first game. Logan Wade hit a triple plating Andrea Eison and Kelsey Harris. Katie Melton then hit a single allowing Wade to score.
Union County’s defense shut Blue Ridge out in the top of the second inning, but the Lady Tigers came back in the third inning to score five runs on four hits, taking a 5-3 lead. The Lady Jackets tied it up 5-5 in the bottom of the third inning with Abby Allen getting a base hit to allow Eison to cross home plate. Brooke Rollins then singled to score Allen.
After pitcher Ashley Vaughan got three fast outs on Blue Ridge, Union County came back in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 7-5 lead. Harris tripled and Megan Russell batted her in. Eison then got a base hit to plate Russell.
Blue Ridge answered in the top of the fifth inning with a run to close the Union County lead 7-6.
Following a scoreless sixth inning, Blue Ridge went on to score a run in the top of the seventh inning and force the game into extra innings.
Blue Ridge’s batters went on a scoring tear in the ninth inning plating seven runs on four hits to take a 14-7 lead and hand the undefeated Lady Jackets their first loss this year.
Had Union County won the game they would have advanced to the Upper State finals this Saturday. However, the loss prompted another match-up between the two teams following a 20-minute break.
Blue Ridge scored first during the second game with a run in the bottom of the second inning. The Lady Tigers went on to score another run in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Blue Ridge plated another runner in the fifth inning for a 3-0 lead. The Lady Jackets threatened to tie or take the lead in the top of the fifth inning when they loaded the bases, however, Blue Ridge got the third out.
Union County loaded the bases again in the sixth inning but came up empty.
After pitcher Tiffany Vaughan got three quick outs for Union County in the bottom of the sixth inning, Union County’s historic undefeated season came to an end when Russell’s base hit turned into a double play for Blue Ridge and Allen was called out on a pop fly.
Union County ends the season with a 20-2 record.
