Despite the loss, the team — 9-7 overall — posted the first winning season in several years.
“I knew it was going to be a close match, but our kids played hard,” coach Tom Adamo said. “I am happy for our kids, this is the first winning season for Union tennis in a long time.”
Tied 3-3, it came down to the the No. 1 double team of David Hope and Jacob Robbins, but a sudden illness to one of the players slowed them and they could not recover.
In singles play, Hope lost to Alexander 6-1, 6-0; Brett Ayers was defeated by Neely 7-6, 6-3; Robbins defeated Williams 6-3, 7-5; Joseph Sawyer beat Russo 6-0, 6-2; Andrew Adamo defeated Satterfield 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles play, Hope and Robbins were defeated 6-3, 6-4 by Alexander and Neely; Hunter Davis and Matt Haney lost to Russo and Szucs 6-3, 6-4.
“We only lose one senior next season and with the experience coming back, Union tennis should be a lot of fun next year,” Adamo said.
Union County, which placed third in region, will not be in the playoffs because in tennis only the top two teams compete in post-season play.
