Union County failed to clinch a playoff birth Tuesday night losing 4-0 to Clinton. The Yellow Jackets must now beat Greer on Friday and hope the math works their way in order for post-season play, which begins next Thursday.

The loss ended a five-game winning streak for Union County, which is now 12-9 overall, 1-5 in region play.

Clinton took advantage of two Union County errors and converted them into two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.

Despite a stellar pitching effort by Alex Pridemore that included seven strikeouts, the Jackets were unable to get any offense going. Brett Duckett did manage a single during the second inning, but was thrown out trying to stretch the single into a double.

Clinton added two more runs in the fourth and sixth innings, for the 4-0 lead.

Union County, which was given five walks by Clinton’s pitcher, mounted an effort at the top of the seventh inning, but came up short. Duckett reached first base on an error and courtesy runner Keiston Smith stole second base, but was thrown out trying to steal third base with two errors.

The Yellow Jackets had no runs, one hit and three errors in the loss to the Red Devils.

Union County will face non-region opponent York 6 p.m. tonight at the Timken Sports Complex. The Jackets will then play Greer 6 p.m. Friday at home to close out the regular season.
