Union County’s tennis team won a big match Monday defeating Blue Ridge 5-2.

“This was a big win for us today, after losing to them early in the season and keeps us in playoff contention,” coach Tom Adamo said. “Unlike other sports in our region, only the top two teams make the playoffs instead of the top four.”

In singles play, Davis defeated David Hope 6-2, 6-0; Brett Ayers beat Wells 6-3, 6-4; Jacob Robbins defeated Suddeth 6-3, 7-6; Sawyer beat Battenfield 6-2, 6-4; Matt Haney defeated Sarbacker 7-5, 6-1.

In doubles action, Andrew Adamo and Hunter Davis defeated Baker and Rogers 2-6, 6-2, (10-6); Davis and Suddeth beat Hope and Robbins 8-7.

“The No. 2 doubles team of andrew adamo and hunter davis clinched the win with a third set tie breaker,” Adamo said. “Hunter played extremely well today and has shown so much improvement and confidence each week.”

In JV play, Jacob Gault defeated Cody 8-2.

Union County (8-3 overall, 3-2 region) will face Clinton 4:30 p.m. today.

“Today’s match against Clinton will decide if we make the playoffs or not,” coach Adamo said. “If we carry over the play and intensity we had yesterday it should be a great and exciting day for us.”
