Union County was edged 6-5 by Riverside Tuesday night despite a sixth-inning comeback by the Jackets.

After going hitless for five innings, the Yellow Jackets put together a string of runs only to come up short when the umpire called a controversial out on a play that would have tied the game.

Riverside struck first in the game scoring three runs at the bottom of the fourth inning. Union County showed a burst of offense in the fourth inning when Joe Beatty doubled on a two-base error, however, they were unable to bring a runner home.

The Warriors upped the lead 5-0 during the fifth inning with two more runs before Union County was able to get the third out.

Union County came to life in the sixth inning scoring five runs to tie the score. During that inning, the Yellow Jackets had three consecutive singles. Jacob Freeman scored on a wild pitch, a long single for Jerrod Cheek brought in two runners, Joe Beatty scored on a Brett Duckett single and Keiston Stevens had an RBI to tie the game at 5-5.

Yellow Jacket pitcher Alex Pridemore nearly got the job done at the bottom of the sixth inning before Riverside managed another run to take a 6-5 lead.

With two outs in the seventh inning, Taylun Wallace hit a single to first base allowing Lawson to score, but the umpire called Wallace out ending the game.

Union County (4-2 overall, 1-2 region) had five runs on six hits with one error during the game.

Next, the Yellow Jackets will host Broome 6 p.m. tonight at the Timken Sports Complex.
