The cause of a fire that burned between 5-10 acres of wooded area in Union on Saturday afternoon is still under investigation.

The call came into the Union County Communications Center at 3:43 p.m. According to Buffalo fire chief Bryan Gardin, the blaze was first spotted by people driving by Palmetto Custom Cabinets at 838 Rice Avenue Extension.

Gardin said it looked like the fire started somewhere behind the Palmetto Custom Cabinets building and spread through the grassy and wooded areas all the way to a powerline break behind and somewhat north of the Spectra Printing and Dyeing building on Industrial Park Road.

Firefighters from the Buffalo, Bonham, Cross Keys and Southside fire departments and officials with Union County Fire and Rescue responded to the fire. U.S. Forestry Service personnel also came in to dig a fire break to stop the fire’s spread which, according to Gardin, was being aided by late afternoon winds.

Three pumper trucks and three tanker trucks were brought in to assist in not only containing and putting out the blaze, but also to protect the buildings in close vicinity.

The fire was still burning around 5 p.m. and Gardin said firefighters were on scene for nearly two hours to make sure the blaze was completely out. The chief also returned to the fire’s location later that afternoon to inspect the premises and make sure the blaze had not rekindled.

Gardin said the assistance provided to his department from the other fire departments and officials was welcomed.

“I appreciate everything they’ve done,” he said Saturday afternoon.
