A Union man will spend the next five years in prison after being convicted on two drug distribution charges Friday afternoon.

Gerard Newton, 203 Ravenscroft St., was found guilty of distribution of cocaine second offense and distribution of cocaine within proximity of a school, park or playground.

Newton was convicted following a two-day trial that began Thursday morning. The case was turned over to the jury around noon Friday. The jury deliberated approximately two hours before returning its verdict.

Judge John C. Hayes III sentenced Newton to five years on the distribution charge and 10 years suspended upon five years and five years probation on the proximity charge with the sentences to run concurrently.

Newton was arrested on April 2, 2009, as part of local law enforcement’s Operation Spring Clean anti-drug sweep.
