The Union County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident that occurred early Saturday morning. A deputy was dispatched to Wallace Thomson Hospital in response to a report of a patient in the emergency room with a stab wound. When the deputy arrived he met with the patient who the report states was extremely intoxicated and had two stab wounds to his left leg.
Under questioning from the deputy, the patient said he gotten into a fight earlier that night at a house on Eaves Road and that he pulled out a pocketknife to defend himself. The report states the patient said he was the only one with a knife and so he must have accidentally stabbed himself.
The deputy then went into the waiting room and spoke with a woman who witnessed the incident. She said the patient had been at her home, had pushed her boyfriend’s sister and this led to a fight between the boyfriend and the patient. The woman said she and her boyfriend’s sister broke up the fight.
After the fight ended, the woman said the two men began talking and so she and the other woman went into another room. She said she then heard her boyfriend yell and ran back into the room to see what was going on. When she got there, she said she saw the patient sitting on the floor bleeding from his thigh. She said she asked him what happened and the patient told her he stabbed himself in the leg.
The woman gave the deputy a written statement. The report states the patient was too intoxicated to give one. Photos were taken of the stab wounds to his upper left leg. The investigation is continuing.
Go-Cart Theft
Getting caught riding around in a stolen go-cart is bad enough, but it gets even worse if you try to resist arrest and you get tasered.
Edward Matthew Sweezy, 29, 1223 Arthur Boulevard, Union, is charged by the sheriff’s office with public drunk, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.
A sheriff’s deputy was monitoring the Union Public Safety Department frequency when dispatch advised public safety officers of a stolen go-cart. The deputy spotted the go-cart on Richard Street, activated his car’s blue lights and siren and stopped the vehicle at the intersection of Richard Street and Lakeview Heights.
The deputy approached the driver, later identified as Sweezy, and asked him to step off the go-cart. The report states Sweezy was intoxicated and became irate and began to curse and yell at the deputy and continued to so despite being asked to stop. The deputy then told Sweezy to turn around and put his hands behind his back but he refused, continuing to curse and yell. He took Sweezy to the ground and after a brief struggle was able to handcuff him.
After standing Sweezy up, the deputy searched him and found a green pill bottle with no lable in his right front pocket containing three pink pills. A crack pipe was also found in Sweezy’s pocket.
The deputy attempted to put Sweezy in his patrol vehicle but Sweezy resisted, forcing the deputy to use the taser on him. He then transported Sweezy to the Union County Jail.
