"With a brand new facility and new uniforms, some of the guys were saying Christmas came early this year," coach Tommy Petty said.
Festivities began at noon for the grand opening, and culminated with Union County taking on Whitmire at 5 p.m. as part of the Union County Pre-Season Baseball Tournament, which runs through March 2.
"It’s really exciting," Petty said. "We feel that we have one of the best home fields in the state now."
The players did not hide their enthusiasm and anticipation as they ran onto the field for warm-ups.
"This is something we’ve been looking forward to since they started building the place,” said catcher Brett Duckett.
"The fans will appreciate the sun shades, concession and dining areas, and the arcade. The players will appreciate excellent playing conditions," said Paul Wilkes, assistant director of Timken Sports Complex. Wilkes is well-acquainted with the team. He coached some of the players at Sims in 2008 and 2009 and in Dixie Boys and Dixie Boys All Stars in 2008.
"This really is an honor," said second baseman Daniel Revis. "This is such a beautiful place. We couldn’t ask for any better."
