Jeff Bell is bringing a renewed passion for soccer at Union County.

The former college soccer player has taken over as head coach for the Jackets’ boys team and is looking to give them a lift.

"Our goal is to be competitive," Bell said. "I am not expecting to win a lot of games or make a run at a championship, however I will be looking to make our presence known."

The team boasts several seniors this year and Bell is counting on Coley Jackson and Alex Tucker, a football kicker who signed a letter of intent to play football at St. Augustine College, to lead the team forward.

The Yellow Jackets lost their first scrimmage 6-1 against York Comprehensive on Feb. 19.

"The team played hard but we still need to work on a few things before the season rolls around," Bell said.

Bell, who played at Newberry College, came to Union County this year from Mid-Carolina where he assisted with the boys varsity team.

"This is my first head coaching job," he said. "I played four years of college soccer at Newberry College and I feel that most of my coaching and experience is drawn from that."
