To the Editor:

The local newspaper stated that Susan Smith is seeking a new trial. She believes she was not properly defended and that her rights were violated during her questioning about the case. She also believes that the facts surrounding her childhood of being molested and abused should have been considered during her trial as a defense.

Has she forgotten about the two precious gifts from God that she allowed to die in a cold dark lake? Did she forget about the man that was falsely accused, questioned and ridiculed because of the description she gave to the investigating officers? Did she forget about the community where she was born and raised that has to carry the dark cloud of shame?

How many times does a person have to answer the same questions where is Union or get the same response "Oh yes, that’s the town where Susan Smith drowned her children in that lake".

Did she forget she was supposed to love and protect those children? Shelter them from harm, not do them harm.

I have not forgotten how much it hurt me to find out those poor little boys were dead and that it was at their mothers hands. Her sentence of life should stand as is. I’m sorry maybe then she will have time to remember.

The article regarding Susan Smith, is by far terrifying, the thought of drowning your children is unforegiveble, but there is hope for this still young woman that needs a second chance at life. There isn't enough people that can say only nice things about her, her family and friends, she was a great student, a great mother and a great friend too so many people. At the time of her accident, she had so much pressure on her building up from years and years of abuse, mental and pysical, not only from her step father and all the men in her life, but the one true man in her life, her real father, who killed himself when Susan was small. Take all the heartache in her life and abuse and the mental illness she had in her life with no true medical experts to let her family know that she was breaking down, and breaking down fast. She obviously didnt get the help that she needed, then and of course during her trial, she didnt have adequate counsil. Please give this girl another chance, before its too late to save her, she needs to be represented fairly and have the right people ( medical experts ) on her side this time around.

Ask the majority of the people of Union, if this girl was not the most perfect girl through the years she spent in Union, i dont know who would be, of course she was sick and needs help, but find her the help she needs, and let her go on with her life. Ron F. ( Detroit )
