The snow has ended across Union County and the rest of the Upstate, but that doesn't mean roads are going to be any better right away this morning.

The Greenville-Spartanburg office of the National Weather Service has issued a special weather bulletin stating hazardous driving conditions will continue through the morning today (Saturday, Feb. 13) as most roads will remain snow and slush covered.

Improvement is expected during the day, however, as temperatures rise above freezing outside the mountains and copious amounts of sunshine helping melt the snow on roads.

The NWS says motorists who cannot delay travel should be prepared for slick conditions and drive with extreme caution this morning.

It looks like the area could see another round of winter precipitation Sunday night through Monday night as the NWS is forecasting a 40-50 percent chance of rain/snow Sunday night and Monday and a slight chance for additional snow overnight Monday.

For more information on the weather, visit www.weather.gov and enter your community's ZIP code for a seven-day forecast.

Crews from the South Carolina Department of Transportation began working diligently Friday morning to make travel for the state's motorists as easy as possible during the storm.

As of Friday night, the DOT reported travel was very hazardous and not recommended. All available resources were being deployed in an effort to keep up with the accumulation, occurring on most South Carolina roadways.

Due to the accumulating snow, the DOT activated its online site for winter weather road conditions.

Motorists can visit www.scdot.org and click on “Winter Road Conditions” to find the conditions of roadways in their home county. This page is activated at times when snow and ice conditions affect South Carolina highways. The reports are updated around the clock by SCDOT personnel in each district several times a day as conditions warrant.

As of 8 p.m. Friday, SCDOT has deployed the following:

* 1824 Maintenance employees actively involved in road operations.

* 6560 Tons of Salt (cumulative total).

* 454 Tons of Sand (cumulative total).

* 219,520 Gallons of Salt Brine and CaCl used(cumulative total).

* 258 Equipment In-Use (snow plows, salt spreaders, sprayers and graders).

Information for this report was gathered from the Greenville-Spartanburg National Weather Service Web site and the South Carolina Department of Transportation Web site. To find more information, visit these sites at www.weather.gov and enter your ZIP code and at www.scdot.org.
