Currently third place in region play and on the heels of a playoff run, the Lady Wolverines have stepped up their play despite losing Geyer, who was region player of the year for two years and broke the 1,000 point mark last year.
“I am really proud of the girls’ success this year,” coach Kim Hamilton said. “We lost a lot of talent last year and many did not expect us to have as much success as we have had.”
Jocelyn Hopp, Lyndie McDaniel and Angel Simpkins have all stepped up this year. But it has been the play of junior center Crystal Wallace that has filled in Geyer’s spot.
“Crystal has been very instrumental to our success and she has truly surprised many of our opponents and fans,” Hamilton said. “She has surpassed the expectations of many and continues to work hard to get even better.”
Earlier this week, Whitmire (6-5 region, 11-10 overall) defeated Southside Christian 31-27. Wallace led the team with 15 points, McDaniel has 10 points, Simpkins scored four points and Hopp had two points.
The Lady Wolverines must win tonight against Greenville Tech Charter to hold onto their third-place position. Tip-off is 5 p.m. at Greenville Tech.
“Our seniors have shown great leadership ability,” Hamilton said. “They are a main part of our success this season.”
