A businessman is now offering a $1,000 reward for the burglars who broke into his business in January and stole more than $11,000.

Modest Keenan said he is increasing the reward for information leading to the arrest of the burglars who broke into his barbershop sometime during the night of Jan. 19. Keenan originally offered a $500 reward but said Monday he is increasing it to $1,000 to encourage people who might know who the burglars are to contact the police.

The incident, which is being investigated by the Union Public Safety Department, involved a break-in at Keenan’s Barbershop at 214 North Pinckney St. The burglars apparently got into the building by breaking the window. They then ransacked the building, pried open a locked door and then stole a combination safe.

Keenan told the responding officer the safe contained $10,100 in cash. Also stolen were six cartons of Newport cigarettes ($130) and a gallon cannister full of pennies ($1,200).

Anyone with information about the break-in should contact the Union Public Safety Department at 429-1713.
