Union County wiped away the cobwebs and pulled out a 54-40 win over Riverside Tuesday night, guaranteeing a playoff birth.
The Yellow Jackets trailed Riverside most of the first half before building a 15-point lead during the fourth period.
“Playing back-to-back (games) and not having played for a week before that is really tough,” coach Joe Pitt said. “We are in the playoffs and now we want to get the home-court advantage.”
Riverside led Union County 13-11 at the end of the first period. The two teams then exchanged leads before Brandon Stapleton scored on two consecutive trips down the court during the third period giving the Jackets a 36-31 lead.
Leading 38-36 at the start of the final period, Union County outscored Riverside 16-4 to take the win.
Stapleton led Union County in scoring with 20 points. Desmond Floyd had eight points, Telvin Dawkins and Joe Beatty each scored five points, T.J. Jeter and Quabel Henderson had four points each, Brett Smith scored three points, Victor Ruth and Michael Mebane each had two points and Rick Murphy added one point.
The Yellow Jackets out-rebounded the Warriors 34-29. Riverside turned the ball over 30 times and Union County gave up the ball 21 times. The Jackets were 9-22 from the free-throw line.
Union County (10-9 overall, 5-2 region) will travel to take on Chapman 7:30 p.m. Friday and Clinton 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9. The Yellow Jackets will close out the regular season 7:30 p.m. Feb. 11 with a Senior night home game against Greer.

Union County’s girls basketball team lost to an impressive Riverside squad 73-47 Tuesday night.
“They are a very seasoned team,” interim coach Melvin Allen said. “They should be favored to go to state this year.”
The Lady Jackets kept up with the Lady Warriors during the first period, however a huge second period put Riverside up 39-18 going into halftime.
Riverside built a 30-point lead during the third period, but the Lady Jackets didn’t give up, outscoring the Lady Warriors 7-5.
“Our girls came back in the fourth quarter and I am proud of them for not giving up,” Allen said.
The Lady Jackets (6-11 overall, 2-5 region) will face Chapman 6 p.m. Friday.
