Whitmire’s wrestling team ended regular-season play with a win and a loss on Wednesday.

The Wolverines were defeated 60-24 by Mid-Carolina and beat Heathwood Hall 36-30.

“I feel like we ended our regular season on a positive note,” coach Jarrod King said. “We defeated Heathwood Hall after losing to them in our season opener by only six points. In addition to that, I'm encouraged that our guys improved against Mid-Carolina by splitting our head-to-head match-ups 4 to 4.”

In the match against Mid-Carolina, Devin Armstrong won by pin in the first round, 119 pounds; Trey Nelson won by pin in the third round, 125 pounds; Dylan Graves lost by default, 130 pounds; John Paul Miller lost by pin in the first round, 135 pounds; Tip Epps won by pin in the third round, 160 pounds; Jared Wicker lost by pin in the second round, 171 pounds; Ethan Campbell won by pin in first round, 189 pounds; Seth Shouse lost by pin in the first round.

During the match versus Heathwood Hall, Armstrong won by pin in the second round; Nelson won by pin in the third round; Graves lost by pin in the second round; Miller won by forfeit; Epps won by pin in the first round; Wicker lost by pin in the second round; Campbell won by forfeit; Shouse won by forfeit.

Following the match, Whitmire took time out to honor three seniors.

“Eric Shouse, Ethan Campbell and Seth Horton were founding members of the WHS wrestling program and wrestled all five seasons of the program's existence,” King said. “During this time they have placed in tournaments, won region titles and provided much needed leadership for our young wrestlers. We will miss them tremendously next season.

Whitmire’s next match will be the Region 2-1A tournament 6 p.m. Feb. 4 at Landrum. The team will also be traveling to Chesterfield Feb. 6 to compete in the 1A Upperstate Team Tournament.
