JONESVILLE — Feeding the masses.

That is what The Potters House of Jonesville is doing — now, on a regular basis — and the fourth installment of its Truck Load of Food distribution events did just that.

Pastor Don Moore reports the church’s food bank served hundreds of people Saturday, Jan. 16, and brought the total number of people in need of food assistance the church has served since October to more than 1,000.

“The January food event last Saturday the 16th brought hundreds of folks from Union, Buffalo, Whitmire, Lockhart, Jonesville and the surrounding area to The Potters House in search of food,” Moore said.

Those who came to the January food distribution event for assistance began receiving vouchers for their boxes at 10 a.m. Saturday and distribution started 30 minutes later. The weather wasn’t a concern as Mother Nature provided a pleasant and warm day for the event.

Volunteers packed boxes full of food.

“Saturday’s boxes were well filled with sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, onions, vitamin water, cereal, toilet paper, paper towels, mayonnaise, pickles, crackers, sauces, pies, canned goods, dressing, creamers, hamburger, ribs, breakfast meats, twice-baked potatoes and many other items,” Moore said. “Some boxes did not contain every item but everyone’s box was 40-45 pounds.”

The pastor thanked all those who volunteered to make the church’s fourth food distribution event another success. He said volunteers worked Thursday, Friday and Saturday last week prior to and on distribution day to pack and help distribute boxes. Moore also thanked everyone who offered donations — whether food or funds — to assist with the continued success of the food bank.

The work is not done. Moore and the church know the need is not going away.

“We are already gathering food for the February date to be announced soon,” the pastor said.

He and the church still hope many others become involved with the food bank and distribution days to make the program a permanent fixture in Union County to serve those in need of food assistance.

Anyone interested in helping, either by food donation or making a monetary contribution to the project, is encouraged to contact Moore or make a donation to The Potters House food account at First Citizens Bank in Jonesville.

Registrations for the next food distribution day will be taken 2-5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at the church in Jonesville. Other registration dates will be made, but have not yet been scheduled. Keep an eye on The Union Daily Times for upcoming registration dates and the day and time of the February distribution date.

Also, anyone who previously has registered to receive food through the Truck Load of Food program does not need to register again to receive food on any distribution day.

HELPING THE CAUSE:

• Anyone interested in donating — food or funds — to help The Potters House food distribution project for those in need of food assistance in Union County and surrounding areas should contact Pastor Don Moore at (864) 680-3465. Also, anyone who has not previously registered to receive food as part of the program can do so 2-5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at the church in Jonesville. Other registration dates also are expected and will be announced at a later date.
