Down by 10 points at halftime, Union County managed to cut the lead down to four points in the third quarter.
Gaffney, which is ranked No. 2 in 4A play however, outscored Union County 31-19 during the fourth quarter, securing the Indian’s win.
This was the final non-conference game for the Jackets.
“If we get this effort every night that we got against Gaffney, we will win every region game,” coach Joe Pitt said.
Four players scored in double-digits for the Yellow Jackets. Quabel Henderson led Union County in scoring with 15 points. Telvin Dawkins scored 14 points; Michael Mebane had 13 points; Brandon Stapleton scored 12 points.
Union County, which is now 6-8 overall, 1-0 region, will next travel to face Blue Ridge 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The Lady Jackets lost 56-31 to Gaffney on Tuesday night.
Kristin Giles led Union County in scoring with 13 points, including three three-point shots. Chelise Morman had five points and Jessica Hall added four points.
Union County, which is 4-7 overall, 0-1 region, travels to take on Blue Ridge 6 p.m. Friday.
