Union County holds off Riverside

Union County opened up region play Friday night with an impressive win over a solid Riverside squad. The Yellow Jackets won 63-56.

"It was a good win on the road," coach Joe Pitt said. "Riverside is a tough place to play. Always has been. But we'll take our first region win. We are 1-0 along with three other region teams."

Riverside started the game off leading 4-2. The was the last time Riverside would have the lead. Union County went on a 7-0 run to start the second quarter.

Center Desmond Floyd gave the Yellow Jackets a 13-point lead off a lay-up in the middle of the second quarter.

Riverside, however, went on a 8-1 scoring run at the end of the first half to cut the lead to 5 points.

TJ Jeter opened the third quarter with a three-point shot to build Union County's lead back up to 12 points.

Riverside then went on a long 23-5 scoring run late in the fourth quarter to come withen three points of Union County, 53-50. Solid free-throw shooting by Brandon Stapleton and Floyd secured the Yellow Jackets win.

Floyd led Union County in scoring with 24 points. Telvin Dawkins, Quabel Henderson and Stapleton each scored seven points. TJ Jeter had six points off two three-point shots; Michael Mebane scored five points; Brett Smith had three points; Joe Beatty had two points.

Next, the Yellow Jackets (6-7 overall, 1-0 region) will host Gaffney 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

"Gaffney is the No. 1 4A team in the state," Pitt said. "We are going to bust our butt and play hard. I hope everyone in Union comes out and supports our boys and girls."
