NEWBERRY — A Whitmire native is being sought in connection to the Nov. 4 shooting of a Newberry man.

Investigators with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office are searching for Anthonia Denise Williams, 41, of 327 Bush River Road, Newberry. Officers have secured arrest warrants for Williams that charge her in the incident.

Those warrants charge Williams with conspiracy, armed robbery, assault with intent to kill, attempt to purchase/possess crack cocaine and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Major Todd Johnson with the sheriff’s department reported Williams was born and raised in Whitmire and investigators say she has a number of ties to the community. They believe she is hiding there or possibly in the Greenville area.

One arrest has been made in the “drug deal gone bad” case since the incident happened in early November.

Ironically, the alleged shooting victim was the first to be arrested.

Corey Olivette Chaplin, 40, of 580 Dennis Dairy Road, Newberry, was arrested Wednesday, Jan. 6, by the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and is charged with conspiracy and attempting to distribute crack cocaine. He was later released the same day on a $30,000 personal appearance bond.

Investigators say Chaplin was shot once in the buttocks area at a residence at 2412 Adelaide St., Newberry, just after 11 p.m. Nov. 4. He came to the residence after agreeing to meet one of the suspects to exchange approximately $100 worth of crack cocaine for money. When he arrived at the Adelaide Street location to make the illegal transaction, he was shot with a handgun.

Chaplin’s injuries were not life threatening.

Johnson reported Thursday it is Williams’ uncle who lives at the Adelaide Street residence where the drug deal and shooting took place. He added it was Williams who set up the deal and called him to set up the arrangements to make it happen.

The case still is under investigation and authorities report there are at least two other suspects who were involved but have not yet been able to identify them.

“They were moving in concert with her (Williams),” Johnson said. “One of the other guys is actually the shooter.”

No meaningful description of the two other suspects is available at this time, but investigators say additional information about them will be released as it becomes available.

The investigation is being handled by the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.
