On Wednesday, the Union County Sheriff’s Office announced an anti-drug sweep with the code name “Operation Winter Surprise” had resulted in the arrest of 18 people in Union and Newberry counties. The arrests were the result of a five-month investigation into drug-trafficking involving marijuana, crack cocaine and prescription medication. One arrest was for the illegal sale of alcohol.
Even as the county’s sweep was under way, the Union Public Safety Department was busy arresting the following men on drug distribution charges:
• Jarvis Andrew Jeter, 19, 441 Whitlock Lake Road, Union, charged Tuesday with distribution of crack cocaine and distribution of crack cocaine within a half-mile of a school.
The warrants for Jeter’s arrest state on Sept. 14, 2009 he sold crack cocaine to an operative of the public safety department. The sale took place on East Main Street within a half-mile of the Alternative School.
• William Samuel Smith, 41, 1208 West Main St., Apt. 8E, Union, charged Tuesday with distribution of crack cocaine and distribution of crack cocaine within a half-mile of a park.
The warrants for Smith’s arrest state on Nov. 17, 2009, he sold crack cocaine to an operative of the public safety department. The sale took place on Lybrand Street within a half-mile of City Park.
• Timothy Lamar Smith, 18, 202 North Church St., Union, charged Wednesday with distribution of crack cocaine and distribution of crack cocaine within a half-mile of a playground.
The warrants for Smith’s arrest state on Sept. 16, 2009, he sold a quantity of crack cocaine to a public safety operative. The sale took place on South Pinckney Street within a half-mile of a playground on West Henrietta Street.
• Edward Eugene Boulware, 44, 115 South 2nd St., Lockhart, charged Wednesday with distribution of crack cocaine, distribution of crack cocaine within a half-mile of a park, distribution of a controlled substance and distribution of a controlled substance within a half-mile of a park.
The warrants for Boulware’s arrest state on Sept. 16, 2009 he sold a quantity of crack cocaine and a quantity of Valium to a public safety operative. The sale took place on West South Street within a half-mile of City Park.
Jarvis Andrew Jeter and William Samuel Smith were among those arrested in Operation Winter Surprise. Jeter is charged with two counts of distribution of crack cocaine and Smith with one count of distribution of crack cocaine.
Public Safety Director Sam White said the arrests made by his department grew out of investigations separate from those that led to Operation Winter Surprise. While the investigations were separate, White said some of the individuals sought by the public safety department were also sought by the sheriff’s office. When they were taken into custody warrants from both agencies were served on them.
Jarvis Andrew Jeter and William Samuel Smith were among those arrested in Operation Winter Surprise. Jeter is charged by the county with two counts of distribution of crack cocaine and Smith with one count of distribution of crack cocaine.
White said the investigations which led to the arrests on Tuesday and Wednesday are continuing and more arrests are possible.
New Year’s Day Drug Arrests
The New Year got off to a bad start for two men when a stop at a traffic checkpoint turned into a trip to jail for drug possession charges.
Jeremy Jermaine Hughes, 20, 904 Lakeside Drive, Union, is charged by the sheriff’s office with reckless driving, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and possesssion of marijuana.
Naquan Tarik Rice, 18, 209 Lawson Avenue, Union, is charged by the sheriff’s office with possession of marijuana and possesion of crack cocaine.
Deputies were conducting a traffic safety checkpoint on S.C. 49 near the Monarch Highway shortly before 1 a.m. when they stopped a vehicle driven by Hughes. The report states as the deputy was asking Hughes for his license he noticed an open container of alcohol in the vehicle. When the deputy went to retrieve it the report states Hughes sped away nearly striking the deputy.
The ensuing chase ended on Hancock Street when four people jumped out of Hughes’ car and ran away. One of them, Rice, was caught and questioned. Rice was placed in a patrol car while deputies searched Hughes’ vehicle. The search turned up almost 28 grams of marijuana and more than one gram of crack cocaine. Rice was then arrested on drug possession charges and transported to the Union County Jail. Hughes was taken into custody on Monday.
Arrests
The following persons were arrested by the public safety department:
Eric Morris Zane, 29, 2312 Whitmire Highway, Union, charged Wednesday with shoplifting.
Nancy Ramon Cruz, 23, 106 Caroleigh Drive, Union, charged Wednesday with having no SC driver’s license and not wearing a seatbelt.
Bryant DeAngelo Smith, 36, 293 Oakland Road, Union, charged Wednesday with driving under suspension third offense and disregarding a traffic control device.
The following persons were arrested by the sheriff’s office:
Toria Lashay Jeter, 21, 117 Cambridge St., Carlisle, charged Tuesday with assault and battery.
Reco Danelle Tucker, 22, 125 Tucker Lane, Carlisle, charged Tuesday with assault and battery.
Megan White, 21, 180 Peachshed Road, Jonesville, charged Tuesday with three counts of fraudulent check.
David Anthony Garner, 49, 237 Monroe St., Union, charged Tuesday with trespassing.
Richard Douglas Eaves, 53, 493 Bruce O. Wilson Road, Union, charged Tuesday with trespassing.
