JONESVILLE — Monday was a busy day for the Jonesville Fire Department with fireighters putting out three fires and preventing a fourth.

The day got off to an early start when firefighters responded to a call from a residence at 425 Bob Little Road. Chief Jimmy Wilkins said an electrical short was threatening to set the house on fire. Firefighters short-circuited any potential fire by cutting power to the affected wire.

Less than four hours later the department was again called out, this time to a house fire at 136 Chapman Road. Wilkins said the fire, which may have been electrical in origin, damaged the living room and went through the roof. He said firefighters were on the scene for nearly four hours making sure the blaze was extinguished. Also responding to the fire were the Kelly-Kelton, Bonham and Pacolet fire departments.

The afternoon brought a grass fire at 112 Muriel Drive which Wilkins said was caused by open burning in a trash can. The blaze spread across three properies burning nearly one-quarter acre. Jonesville responed to this blaze alone and had the fire extinguished within 20 minutes.

The day ended with firefighters again called out, only they didn’t have to go too far this time as the house on fire was at 120 Webber St. — just a few yards from the station house.

Wilkins said firefighters were meeting that evening and some were still there when the call came in. He said they immediately went down the street to find the fire was in the house’s attic. Wilkins said they went inside, pulled down the disapearing stairs and put out the fire. Firefighters were on the scene for nearly two hours, leaving shortly before 11:30 p.m.

Firefighters from Kelly-Kelton and Bonham also responded to the call.

Wilkins said the Webber Street fire is also believed to be electrical in origin. He said no one was injured there or at the Chapman Road fire.

Since the beginning of the year, Wilkins said the Jonesville Fire Department has responded to 13 calls for firefighting or other emergency assistance.

The Bryant family is in the process of temporarily patching up their house on Chapman Road until complete repairs can be made at a later date. They thanked their neighbors for their assistance since the blaze and thanked the Jonesville Fire Department for putting it out.

The house on Webber Street is owned by Roy Rector whose daughter and grandson and his family live there. He praised the Jonesville Fire Department for their quick response to the fire and for preventing it from doing more damage to the house.

“They did a really good job,” he said.
