LaVerne Tripp, a member of the world-famous Blue Ridge Quartet, and his wife Edith will host a one-night-only “Food-raiser” event at the Jonesville church at 7 p.m. Jan. 7 and the public is invited and encouraged to attend.
The Potters House Pastor Don Moore received an unexpected call on Christmas Eve. It was Tripp who had heard about what Moore and the church is doing to feed people of Union County in need of assistance.
“He said he had read about the plight of folks in Union County and about The Potters House food bank and our mission, and wanted to help,” Moore said.
So the foundation for this special event was laid and Tripp agreed to attend and perform at no charge to the church. Moore said the gospel singer and his wife have agreed to come for “only a love offering for anyone who can just bring some food.”
People who plan to attend the show Thursday are encouraged to bring whatever they can that will be used for the next food distribution. Moore said anything and everything will be appreciated.
“A can, a bag, a box — just some food for the food bank,” he said.
Those who attend the special evening with Tripp are asked to simply drop off their donations outside the church’s doors.
A potluck supper will be served in conjunction with Thursday’s “Night of Singing” and pintos, soup and cornbread will be served.
Supplies for the January edition of Truck Load of Food are being gathered but Moore said he and the church are expecting a high turnout for the fourth installment.
“Food is coming in but we project a very high turnout in January and again we are not sure about receiving more from Second Harvest,” Moore said.
Second Harvest provides food — at a cost — for programs like The Potters House food bank. The church also planned not to receive anything from the organization in December but did get some when another church was unable to pick its portion up. That amount helped feed the 300 families who came to the December event with enough left over for a start on this month’s, but Moore said more is needed.
“We are receiving calls daily from those in need,” he said, adding he looks forward to the day when the church never runs out and never has to say no to those in need.
He also envisions a time in which the church can be open every day to provide assistance from the food bank to those in need.
“For us to do that,” he said, however, “we need help.”
Any donations are accepted. Food, of course, is key, but Moore said other donations such as volunteering time to help, financial assistance and appliances to store food such as freezers — which the church still needs — are needed and appreciated.
The Truck Load of Food events through The Potters House have served nearly 1,000 Union County families and individuals since the food bank project began in October. Moore and the church know the need is not going away and hope others become involved to make the program a permanent fixture.
Registration for the next food bank event will begin from 1-6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7 — the day of the special concert with Tripp. People in need of assistance also will be able to register from 2-5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, and again on Friday, Jan. 15 — the day prior to the event.
Also, anyone who previously has registered to receive food through the Truck Load of Food program does not need to register again to receive food on Jan. 16.

ABOUT TRIPP:
LaVerne Tripp started his career as a solo artist and singing with local groups but gained fame when he joined the Blue Ridge Quartet in 1969. The gospel singer was part of the group for seven years and in that time wrote and recorded three consecutive No. 1 songs: “I Know,” “That Day Is Almost Here” and “After Calvary.” He was voted male vocalist of the year and his song “I Know” was song of the year. He was nominated eight times for the coveted Dove Award and at the pinnacle of the group’s success he surrendered his will and life to the care of God and launched out to fulfill God’s destiny for his life as an evangelist. He and his wife Edith hosted the “Praise the Lord” program on the Trinity Broadcasting Network and over the last 35 years of ministry he has seen more than 800,000 souls born into the Kingdom of God, traveled around the world, built Bible schools, churches, children’s homes and now is the soul sponsor of 300 children adopted in India.
