Despite opening with a 9-0 run, Union County was unable to pull off a win against Fort Mill on Tuesday night, losing 80-74 during second round of the Border Shootout in Landrum.

The Yellow Jackets will fight for third place in the tournament 5:30 p.m. tonight against Broome or Spartanburg Christian Academy, depending on who won last night.

Trailing by 18 points in the third quarter, Union County went on a 16-2 run to close the gap to 74-68, however Fort Mill held the team off.

“We made it tight and interesting at the end,” coach Joe Pitt said. “Our guys showed a lot of character.”

Desmond Floyd led all Union County scorers with 24 points. Telvin Dawkins scored 20 points; Brandon Stapleton scored 13 points; Carlos Smith scored five points; Joe Beatty and Michael Mebane each scored four points; T.J. Jeter added two points.

“We played with intention when we were down by 18, but we got to play with intention from the git-go,” Pitt said.

On Monday, Union County won their first round match-up against Blackburg, 87-74.

Down by as many as six points during the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets tied the score at the half. Union County then went on a big run late in the third quarter to secure the game.

Stapleton led the Yellow Jackets with 34 points.
