Kelley Strong won her first wrestling match Tuesday giving the Union County junior the honor of being the school’s first female to win on the mat.

The win by forfeit came during the Clover Invitational Tournament in which the Yellow Jackets went 0-6.

“We have had some other female wrestlers before, but they never started,” coach Todd Davis said. “Kelley has started all year and the win gives her the title.”

During the first day of the tourney, Union County lost to Blufton 75-6. The only Yellow Jacket to win a match was Dylan Lawson who won by pin, 152 pounds. Lawson won all six of his matches and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Blufton went on to win the 10-team tournament.

The tournament marked the first time a point has been scored against Lawson this season.

Next, the Jackets, who were missing five normal starters, faced off against Laurens. Union County lost 54-19. Winners were: Ethan Turner won by pin, 130 pounds; Lawson won by major decision; Brandon Frost won by decision, 160 pounds; Bryan Dill won by pin.

Union County then lost 47-28 to Nations Ford. Preston Rice won by injury default, 135 pounds; Lawson won by forfeit; Dill won by pin, 171 pounds; Matthew Dill won by major decision, 189 pounds; Brian Wells won by pin, 215 pounds.

The Jackets wrapped up the first day of the tournament with a 42-33 loss to Northwestern.

Dylan Williams won by pin, 119 pounds; Turner won by forfeit; Lawson won by pin; Frost won by pin; Wells won by decision; Jonathon Messer won by default, 285 pounds.

On Tuesday, Union County had two matches.

They lost to Broome 51-27. Lawson won by pin; Frost won by pin; Bryan Dill won by decision; Wells won by pin; Jason Adams won by pin, 285 pounds.

Union County then lost to Clover 52-27. Strong won by forfeit, 112 pounds; Turner won by pin; Lawson won by pin; Frost won by decision; Wells won by forfeit.

“We are just young,” coach Todd Davis said. “When you start five or six freshman it is just tough. But, the good thing is they are young and if they stick with it, we will have a promising future.”

The Yellow Jackets will host their first region opponent Blue Ridge 7 p.m. Thursday.
