Micheal Preston McLain, 302 Toluca St., is charged by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with assault and battery with intent to kill and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
McLain is charged in a shooting incident that occurred shorly after 10:30 p.m. May 26, 2008. A Union Public Safety Officer was dispatched to a residence on Oak Street in response to a report of a shooting. The officer was also informed the victim was being driven to Wallace Thomson Hospital by a friend. After arriving on scene of the shooting, officers conducted a search of the area looking for the suspect who was reportedly wearing a shirt with the No. 4 on it. They were unsuccesful in their search for the suspect but investigators did recover three 9mm shell casings from the scene.
Following the search, an officer went to the hospital to interview the victim who identified McLain as the man who’d shot him. The victim was shot in the left wrist area, the right knee and the lower back area. The bullet fired into his back had exited through his stomach. Due to the seroius nature of his wounds, the victim was transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
The investigation into the shooting produced a warrant for McLain’s arrest but due to a lack of cooperation from witnesses at the time the warrant was suspended or “nolle prossed.” This allowed authorities to reinstate it upon further investigation.
That investigation was conducted by the officer handling the case with the assistance of a SLED agent. They discovered new evidence which, along with statements from cooperating witnesses, allowed the warrant to be reinstated and served on McLain. He was taken into custody last Tuesday and transported to the Union County Jail where he remained as of Monday afternoon.

When he got back he found that his wallet had been taken from the truck along with $4 in cash and an $88 payroll check. Also in the wallet at the time it was stolen was a Wachovia Bank card.
