A long-time family physician with Carolinas Health Associates in Union and the Union Hospital District which includes Wallace Thomson Hospital is leaving his family practice to pursue a career in emergency medicine.

According to hospital district CEO Bill Leonard, Dr. M. John Flood’s last day at CHA Center for Family Healthcare will be Dec. 31.

“We have had a very open discussion with Dr. Flood about his plans to pursue emergency medicine for some time and have taken appropriate steps to make this transition as smooth as possible,” Leonard said.

Flood has been a member of Wallace Thomson Hospital’s medical staff for 15 years.

“And has served his patients well,” Leonard said.

He added the hospital and hospital district appreciate Flood’s development of the Center for Family Healthcare Practice which is now part of Carolinas Health Associates and are pleased he is leaving his patients in the capable hands of Drs. Alisahah Cole and Erica Savage-Jeter.

However, Leonard said Flood’s passion is emergency medicine. The doctor already has served that calling as medical control physician for the Union County EMS for several years.

That’s a relationship the hospital district plans to continue for many more years.

“Dr. Flood intends to stay on the hospital staff in emergency medicine and will continue to serve as Medical Control Physician for Union County EMS,” Leonard said.

While Flood transitions from his family practice to one in emergency medicine at Wallace Thomson, the hospital district already has begun the process to find someone to take on the position he leaves open at CHA as a family practitioner.

“We have signed a letter of intent with a family medicine physician and we will announce when the employment agreement is finalized,” Leonard said. “Furthermore, we have recruited a nurse practitioner who will begin over the holidays.”

The hospital looks forward to continue working with Flood and wishes him the best in his new endeavor in emergency medicine.

“We wish Dr. Flood well with his emergency medicine career,” Leonard said.
