The SC Highway Patrol is investigating an accident that took the life of a Union man late Friday morning.

L/Cpl Kathy Hiles said the accident happened around 11:10 a.m. on U.S. 176 a mile south of Jonesville. Hiles said the accident occurred when a 2009 Dodge Caliber rearended a moped. Both vehicles were northbound at the time of the collision.

Hiles said the driver of the moped was thrown from the vehicle by the impact. She said he was not wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Union County Coroner William Holcombe identified the driver of the moped as Austell Robinson, 82, 402 Gage Avenue.

Hiles said the driver of the Dodge was Pamela Burnett Inman, 41, of Newberry. She said Inman was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.

The SCHP’ Reconstruction Unit is handling the investigation which Hiles said is continuing. She said no charges have been filed at this time.
