Mr. Meador was born on Nov. 30, 1918 in Union SC, to the late Leroy Glenn and Sally Tinsley Meador. He served with the U.S. Navy in Aviation Ordnance before and during WWII and was in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He was in Trinidad, off the coast of South America during the early years of the war. After returning from the war, he attended North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC, and completed a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Mr. Meador came to Oak Ridge in 1953 with the Rust Engineering Co. from their home office in Pittsburg P A. From 1956 until his retirement in 1984 he was a Development Engineer for Union Carbide Nuclear Corp. in the Reactor and Energy Divisions at both X-I0 and Y-12.
Mr. Meador was a member of First Baptist Church, having served as Chairman of both the Boards of Deacons and Trustees. He was director of Adult III Sunday School Dept. and had been a teacher in that Dept. He had also served as President of the Keenagers.
He was a life member of Sigma Chi with many interests, serving on the boards of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Tennessee Conservation League where he worked to make possible the deer hunts on the Oak Ridge Wildlife Management Area. He had been President of the Oak Ridge Century Lions Club and helped organize the Oak Ridge Big Game Club.
He was preceded in death by sisters Mae Sue and Dorothy H. Meador of Union SC; brothers Waring B. Meador, a WWII casualty, Leroy Glenn Meador, Jr. of Union SC, W. Rogers Meador of Virginia; and daughter Pamela Sergent Cannon.
Mr. Meador is survived by his wife of 42 years, Pelea E. Meador; daughter Judith Ferra of Louisiana; son John T. Meador II and wife Sue of Bull Shoals AR; and stepson Arville M. Billings, Jr. and wife Genois of Oak Ridge.
He is also survived by grandchildren Joe Ferra of Louisiana, Jessica and Danielle Meador of Bull Shoals, AR, Stephanie and Tony Sergent, and Ivy Cannon; step-grandchildren Cindy Billings of Soddy-Daisy and Dr. Barbara Currier and husband Bobby of Knoxville; and step-great-grandchildren, Alex Billings of Knoxville, Meredith and Miranda Woodfin of Soddy-Daisy, and Joseph Currier of Knoxville.
Visitation will be on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 12:30-2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Oak Ridge with the funeral service to follow at the church. Revs. Tim Borchert, Ray Lloyd and Tim Bounds will officiate. Burial will be at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Rockwood TN immediately after the service. Deacons of First Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family requests that memorials be made to Home Missions, First Baptist Church, Oak Ridge TN.
