Terrell Rashad Jones, 18, 121 Romaine Drive, Spartanburg, was arrested Thursday by the Union County Sheriff’s Office and charged with armed robbery. Jones was transported to the Union County Jail where he remained in custody as of this morning.
Jones, along with Xavier Decarlos Parks, 17, 125 Fox Hall Road, Spartanburg, and Demarius Allen McKanic, 18, 202 East Monroe St., Union, are charged with robbing a man at gunpoint on Oct. 31.
The robbery occurred shortly after 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Hayes Drive and John Street. The victim was walking when he was approached by four young black males who asked him where they could buy drugs. When he told them he didn't mess with drugs at least three of them pulled out guns and ordered him to empty his pockets
The victim did so, throwing the contents to the ground and the robbers scooped up his belongings and ran off. Items taken included a wallet containing $270, his driver's license and Social Security card, a set of keys and a cell phone.
The victim described the robbers as being between 15-18 and wearing hoodies. He said one was a lot taller than the others and his jacket had designs on it. The taller of the four did most of the talking and pulled out a large, semi-automatic pistol, pulled back the slide and made the demands. The others had smaller weapons including a revolver and the other a chrome color semi-automatic.
Parks and McKanic were taken into custody a few hours later when deputies stopped them for speeding. While questioning them, deputies noticed they appeared nervous and also saw what appeared to be the butt of a handgun sticking out from under some clothes in the back seat. The butt belonged to a 9mm Hi-Point Arms pistol.
While being searched, McKanic admitted he had another gun in his boot, a loaded Omega HS-400 .22 caliber pistol. In searching McKanic, deputies also found a small bag of marijuana along with $15 in his pocket.
A search of the vehicle turned up a Dell laptop computer, a Kodak printer, a box of .22 caliber Winchester ammunition, extra keys, phones, two dark-colored jackets and a red shirt. Deputies also found a toboggan, a ski mask and gloves.
Further investigation linked Parks and McKanic to the Monarch robbery. The victim identified Parks and McKanic as two of the teens who robbed him. He also identified the keys found in the car as his.
Parks and McKanic are both charged with armed robbery and violation of S.C. gun law. McKanic is also charged with possession of marijuana while Parks is also charged with speeding. They are also charged with possession of stolen property under $1,000 for the computer and printer that was found in their car. The items were reported stolen from a residence in Spartanburg County earlier in the week.
McKanic was still in jail as of this morning while Parks has been released on bond.
Escape
Climbing out a window trying to escape from deputies serving a warrant on you is a good way to run into a resisting arrest charge.
Deputies were dispatched to the home of Kayla Leree Murphy, 19, 105 Partridge Road, Union, to serve her with a magistrate's bench warrant. They arrived shortly after 8 p.m. Friday and were able to get her to the door and then get inside the house.
When told she was under arrest Murphy said she wanted to put on another shirt and went into another room. She then climbed out a window and ran away from deputies all the way to the Creekside Mobile Home Park where deputies found her later.
This time there was no going into another room to change a shirt, no climbing out a window and no running away. Instead, Murphy was placed under arrest and transported to jail for both the bench warrant and for resisting arrest.
