The headline of this piece appears in the program of this year’s Union County Veterans Day Program and sums up the purpose of the holiday.

The 2009 event is slated for 11 a.m., following the annual Veterans Day Parade beginning at about 10:30 a.m. on Main Street, on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Parade entries are asked to begin lining up in front of the Union County Courthouse around 9:30 a.m.

The program will take place in front of the Veterans Memorial at the intersection of Main and Mountain streets.

This year’s Parade Marshall is U.S. Army World War II veteran Jack Wilburn and Union County Veteran of the Year is U.S. Army veteran the Rev. Aubrey Calvert. The speaker for this year’s event is Tim Driggers who served in the U.S. Army in Kuwait, Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The 2009 Veterans Day Program promises to be moving and inspiring.

Musical selections by the Union County High School Chorus, Cindy Fore, Jantzen Childers and “Taps” by Ronnie Lybrand are included as well as special portions dedicated to honoring the men and women who have sacrificed for their nation.

The invocation will be given by the Rev. David Caughman Jr. of Grace United Methodist Church and a U.S. Air Force Reserve veteran. Childers will lead the recognition of Gold Star and Blue Star Mothers, dignitaries and be charged with the recognition of Union County veterans from World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf/Iraqi/Afghanistan operations, Peacetime veterans, Homeland Security personnel and active duty military personnel.

The Union County High School Junior ROTC will raise the service organization flags and an F-16 flyover is planned toward the beginning of the program.

Awards for the winning posters from a poster contest for students in grades kindergarten through five sponsored by the Union County Arts Council will be given and World War II vet Bill Owenby, Korea vet I.G. Vanderford and Vietnam veteran Bill Montgomery will place the wreath at the memorial.

A 21-gun salute will be given by members of the Union Army National Guard Unit, followed by Lybrand’s performance of “Taps” and the closing prayer will be given by U.S. Army Peacetime and Gulf War veteran Tyra Parham.

The public is encouraged to come out for the parade and program to honor all those who have served and who currently serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.

WALLACE THOMSON TO HONOR VETS:

Wallace Thomson Hospital in Union will hold an event honoring veterans and current service men and women around its flag pole tentatively scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day. Korean War veteran and hospital board of trustees member I.G. Vanderford will be present to kick off the event and everyone is invited. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the hospital lobby.
