The Yellow Jacket's cross-country team is positioned to do great things today as they compete in the region championships.
Solid performances from seniors to freshmen have stacked up to give Union County the best team it has seen in several years. Last year the Jackets girls team placed fourth in the final region standings. This year the girl's squad is right behind region-leading Riverside and the boys are in fourth place.
"I think we have a very good possibility of doing better than we did last year," said Brandon Burton, who has been on the team for four years. "We have newer people this year and they are doing very good for their first time."
The Jacket's top players are junior Amanda Sinclair and freshman Jesse Luttner.
"We are actually the best we have been in a while," runner Christa Green said. "Our girl's team is very close this year and we are very competitive. We run very close times to each other."
Following the region championships, the Jackets will participate Saturday in the Upper State Championship meet at Heritage Park in Simpsonville. From there, the top 13 girl's teams and the top 12 boy's teams will move on to the stat meet Nov. 7 in Columbia. Individuals can also qualify for state by finishing in the top 45 overall.
