"It was a tough loss," coach David Lipsey said. "We played hard and did some good things, but it was tough."
The Jackets now fall to 2-2 in the region and 4-5 overall.
Clinton jumped on the scoreboard quick with Deon Speaks running the ball down to Union County's 5-yard line. The Jackets held Clinton for three plays, setting up a field goal to give the visiting team a 3-0 lead with 9:03 left in the first quarter.
The Yellow Jackets put together a few nice drives throwing and passing the ball but were unable to get the ball into Clinton territory.
Union County finally got on the scoreboard during the middle of the second quarter with a 42-yard field goal kick by Alex Tucker, to tie the game 3-3.
The Yellow Jacket's quarterback Nick Monroe put together a nice drive and ran the ball in for a touchdown with 30.7 seconds remaining in the first half to give the Jackets a 10-3 lead.
Clinton started the second half with two big pass plays and a touchdown pass with 7:44 left in the third quarter to tie the game at 10-10
The Jackets drove the ball down to Clinton's 30-yard line but missed a 45-yard field goal attempt.
With just 4:47 left to play in the game, Union County's Kyle Trantham intercepted the ball in the endzone giving the Jackets hope of pulling out the game.
However, Clinton intercepted the ball and ran it to Union County's 7-yard line with just 7.5 seconds remaining. Clinton's 25-yard field goal attempt was good and won the game 13-10.
"We just weren't able to close the game tonight," Lipsey said. "We'll go back to work this week and see what we can do against Blue Ridge."
