Students from grades 5-12 in the Union County School District were asked to enter an essay about their greatest grandparent. The school district is partnering with the fair for the contest.
More than 3,500 entries were submitted from across the county, including from students at Union Day School.
The essays already were judged and were grouped by age — kindergarten through second grade, grades 3-5, grades 6-8 and grades 9-12. Students wrote about living and deceased grandparents and some wrote about an important adult who is filling the role as a grandparent in their lives.
Each grandparent nominated will receive a free ticket for admission to the fair for themselves and the grandchild who nominated them for the award ceremony set to begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24.
The winning grandfather and grandmother will be announced on the main stage area and entertainment for the event will be provided by WSPA-TV personality Jack Roper who is serving as master of ceremonies.
The public is encouraged to come out for the Union County Fair which runs Tuesday, Oct. 20-Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Union County Fairgrounds in Union.
The Grandparent of the Year Awards will be given at 6:30 p.m. when the winners are announced on Saturday as part of the 2009 fair’s closing events.
