UCHS battles Clinton for 1st

Clinton defeated Union County’s girls’ tennis team 4-3 on Wednesday for first place in the region.

In singles play, Owens (C) won 6-1, 6-2 over Kelsey Harris; Abby Allen (UC) won 6-1, 6-0 over Seawright; Lauren Harrison (UC) won 6-0, 6-3 over Wilson; Kristen Martin (UC) won 6-3, 3-6, 10-5 over Nichols; Vaughan (C) won 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 5-10 over Brittany Ledford.

In doubles play, Owens/Seawright(C) won over Allen/Harris (UC) 7-5, 6-2; Lawton/Burroughs (C) won 6-2, 4-6, 10-2 over Logan Wade and Rachel Jones.

“Tennis doesn't really get much better than the match tonight,” said coach Kelly Jenkins. “The girls came in ready to win and take possession of first place in the region. It's hard not to have the win, but I think we now know that we can compete with a quality team like Clinton. I hope this will give us the drive and confidence to finish the season strong.”

UCHS (4-3) travels to Greer on Monday.

WCS TENNIS

WHITMIRE — The Lady Wolverines’ tennis team defeated 2A Abbeville 7-0 on Wednesday.

In singles play, Jenna Baker defeated K. Durham 6-2, 5-7 (10-8); Lynlee Thompson defeated A. Weed 6-2, 6-1; Deanna Willard defeated C. Bishop 2-6, 7-6(6), (11-9); Alex Cromer defeated C. New 6-4, 6-4; Allyson Greenway defeated G. Durham 7-6(4), 6-4.

In doubles play, Thompson and Willard defeated M. Maeger and S. Horne 8-1; Jordan Suber and D.J. Norton defeated C. Saylors and K. Smith 6-2, 2-6 (10-5).

WCS (7-2) travels to Landrum on Tuesday.

Union County’s girls’ golf team played Laurens and Chapman on Tuesday, picking up another win.

Scores: Laurens 196, UCHS 219, Chapman 225

UCHS travels to Blue Ridge on Monday.
