Broome won the toss and elected to receive. Brandon Shetley kicked the ball to the 10-yard line, where the Broome defender was tackled. Broome couldn’t move the ball and had to punt. Union got good field position on the Broome 47, but couldn’t get a first down.
Broome got the ball on their own 38. On first down, Brandon Frost got a two-yard tackle for loss and then repeated another tackle for loss along with Robert Sims.
Union got the ball on the 47. Quarterback Kieston Smith had a good run to the 38 and then completed a pass to Michael Edwards, giving the Jackets first and 10 from the 20-yard line. Smith then rolled out and ran in for Union’s first touchdown. The two-point play was successful and Union led 8-0 with just 14 seconds left in the first quarter.
Union kicked off to start the second quarter. Broome ran to the 33 and on the first play, C.J. Garden tackled the runner behind the line of scrimmage for a two-yard loss. On the next play, Garden and Kieandre Rider combined for another tackle for loss, putting them back on their own 28-yard line at 8:35 left in the half.
Broome attempted to punt, but a bad snap was recovered by Union on the 12-yard line. Quarterback Keiston Smith had two good consecutive runs, punching the ball across the goal line for Union’s second touchdown with six minutes left. Adrian Brown ran the ball in for two points making the score 16-0.
Broome got good field position on Union’s 48 and moved the ball deep in Union territory, but was intercepted by Brandon Knox, who ran the ball back to Union’s 48. Union couldn’t move the ball and was forced to punt. On Broome’s first possession, Broome fumbled which was recovered by Chris Glenn. Thanks to some great offensive line blocking, Michael Stewart pulled off a good run up the middle to the 16-yard line with 20 seconds left in the half. A Union pass into the end zone was intercepted to end the half.
At the half, coach Caleb Clark told the team they had to play every play wide open. "If you do, field position doesn’t matter. Do it wide open. Your job is to keep getting better. Improve this next quarter."
On the kickoff, Kalay Jones had a good runback to the Broome 46 on a pooched kick. Smith ran to the 39 and then to the 32-yard line giving them first down. His number was called again and he took it to the 24. Another pass put the ball on the 13. On the next play, Union scored but a penalty brought the ball back to the 17. Quarterback Adam Gregory then found Victor Ruth for a touchdown with 6 minutes left in the quarter. The two-point play was foiled. Union led 22-0.
On the next series, Broome finally found the end zone and the extra point was good.
Union was held scoreless during the fourth quarter, but Broome scored again narrowing the score to 22-14 with 1:53 left on the clock.
They then tried an on-side kick, which perfectly bounced to Dalton Murphy on the right end of Union’s line. Realizing he was about to experience a linebacker’s dream, he gathered it in and ran to the Broome 5-yard line. A penalty brought the ball back. Union then was able to run out the clock to end the game.
After the game, Clark congratulated the players on their effort and challenged them to keep it up and keep improving.
Quick shots: Nine 9th grade players were brought up for the JV, as there was no 9th grade game. They were CJ Garden, Mark Hardy, Jarred Fowler, Nate Williford, Demarcus Gory, Adrian Brown, Amos Miller, Brandon Shetley and Michael Cunningham … Co-captains were Adam Gregory and Kiandre Riley … Former Jacket football player Wilson Bates was an official … Shetley got good distance on his kickoffs.
