Mr. Maness was born in Inman, Va., Aug. 30, 1915, a son of the late Sterling Smith Maness and Charity Minor Maness. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and also the U.S. Navy having served in World War II. Mr. Maness was a member of Putman Baptist Church, American Legion Post 78, Duncan Lodge 256 and Past Great Sachem Redmen of S.C. Mr. Maness retired from textiles and was first married to the late Edna Miller Maness.
Surviving are two daughters, Sue Ridings and husband Felston and Brenda Sumner and husband Tommy all of Buffalo; a son, James H. Maness and wife Stella of Buffalo; two sisters, Valice Maness and Ruby Ford and husband J.W. all of Buffalo; two step-sons, Eddie Simmons and wife Betty Jo and Tommy Simmons and wife Suzette all of Buffalo; seven grandchildren, David Ridings and wife Roxanne, Gregg Maness, Lori Dochterman and husband Doug, Michele Lee and husband Lonnie, Elizabeth Gordon and husband Jon, Tommy Sumner Jr and wife Donya and Lesley Robbins and husband Matthew; seven great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, at Putman Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Ted Hodges and the Rev. Donald Tillman and the Rev. Kevin Dalton. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with military honors and Masonic rites.
Mr. Maness’s grandsons will serve as active pallbeares. Members of Buffalo Senior Citizens Club, Evelyn Brown, Hilda Osborne, Carol Upton, Danny McGlocklin, David Sullivan, Brent Wright, Ernest O’Shields and Yvonne and Irvin Childers are asked to sit in a group.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 Saturday evening at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
