Thunderstorms wreaked havoc on local sports action on Wednesday.

Jonesville Middle’s first game at the new school against John E. Ewing was canceled due to lightning and will be rescheduled.

Union County’s tennis team started, but had to stop for the second straight day due to the storm. They’ll try again today with Broome.

Whitmire’s tennis team was up 3-0 when the storm brought action to a hault.

UCHS’ cross country meet at Riverside also was canceled.

Yellow Jacket girls’ golf also was put on hold by the storm, after one hole.

Volleyball teams did play ...

SIMS

D.R. Hill defeated Sims 2-0. Hill won 26-24 and 25-15.

Sims also lost 2-0 to Boiling Springs.

“We made many serving and passing errors, but I was pleased to see the effort the girls gave,” said coach Tracy Duncan. “Being our first few matches, I was pleased with how well they played.

“I only have four returning players and one was out with the flu. We have a very young and inexperienced team, but I look forward to them improving tremendously during this year.

On Tuesday, Lockhart defeated Sims 3-0. The Lady Tigers host conference foes on Monday.

Tuesday score ...

WHITMIRE

Greenville Tech defeated Whitmire’s volleyball team 3-0 on Tuesday.

The Wolverines started out strong against the Chargers and played well, before falling 25-8 in game 1.

WCS lost the second game 25-7 and the third game 25-5.

Lyndie McDaniel, Crystal Wallace and Kentrel Whitmire played well, according to coach Nicole Adams.

“I have seen improvement,” said Adams. “The girls have tried and that's all a coach can ask for. It will be a long road to perfection, but we will hold our heads high and continue on the road of improvement.”

WCS (0-3) hosts Mid-Carolina today.
