Nursing home assault
Leroy Wilkes, 61, of Pinckney Place on 107 Cornwell St., was charged Thursday by the Union Public Safety Department with assault and battery.
A report said PFC Eddie Williams was called to the Wallace Thomson Hospital Emergency Room to speak with someone who had been assaulted. The victim, Charles Miller, also 61, said he gave Wilkes $1 to got to the store to buy him something. Miller said he realized he had given Wilkes a $10 bill instead of a $1 bill. He said he went into the hallway where Wilkes was and asked him if he had given him a $10 bill. He said Wilkes began arguing with him and went to his room.
Later, Miller, who told Williams he is blind, was in his room. He said he heard Wilkes come down the hall. He said he went to the hallway, and Wilkes began arguing with him. Miller said he went to step away and Wilkes took his walking cane and hit him over the head.
Miller said he called for help and an employee came. He told her he had been struck in the head. He said he asked how his head looked and she said it looked bad and he had a “knot” on his forehead. She advised he might need EMS. He told her to call for it.
Wilkes told Williams that Miller started arguing with him about money and began swinging his arms at him and hit him in the arms with a walking stick. The report said Williams examined Wilkes’ arms and head and was unable to see any marks or injuries.
Wilkes was released from the Union County Jail on $549 cash bond.
