VOLLEYBALL
Chester defeated Union County’s junior varsity volleyball team 2-1.
The Jackets won the first game 25-19.
“We played a great first game,” said coach Sherry Jackson. “They played together as a team and hustled after every ball. There were many great passes and sets for our hitters. They made saves that anyone would have thought they never would have gotten back across the net. It was an awesome game to watch.”
Unfortunately, the stellar play didn’t continue in the second game. Chester won it 25-16.
“We got off to a bad start and never were able to come back,” said Jackson. “After a few mistakes, I saw the confidence start going down and they were not able to get it back.”
Chester won the serve for the third game and used strong serving for a 15-8 win.
“I told the girls I was extremely proud of the great things they did, especially in the first game,” said Jackson. “We have to learn to forget the mistakes and move on.”
UCHS (1-1) travels to Woodruff on Sept. 14.

VOLLEYBALL
Newberry defeated Whitmire’s volleyball team 3-0 on Thursday, but the Lady Wolverines showed they’re improving.
The Bulldogs won 25-5, 25-12 and 25-22.
“The last set was an intense game with the score going back and forth,” said coach Nicole Adams. “The Wolverines had many outstanding plays and have shown improvement, even from their first match against Landrum just two days before.
“Lyndie McDaniel again served powerfully and consistently. She has proved to be an asset as first server.
“Angel Simpkins also proved to be a consistent server in the last set, holding out several points before the Wolverines lost serving rights.
“Crystal Wallace stepped up on the court and took several balls, which led to extraordinary passes.
“The Wolverines have a strong hitter in Crystal Wallace and it is tough not to see her being set up. We will continue to work on setting skills in order to use our powerhouse.
“We are looking forward to continuing the season and improving our skills with every practice and every match.”
WCS (0-2) travel to Greenville Tech on Tuesday.
