A faulty window air conditioning unit may have been the cause of a fire that destroyed a Union County home Wednesday.

Buffalo Fire Department was called to the Gwinn home on 241 Molasses Mill Road, Pauline around 3:17 p.m. Fire Chief Bryan Gardin said the back of the house was on fire and the blaze seems to have been started by an air conditioner that short-circuited.

Buffalo was assisted in fighting the fire by departments from Cross Keys, Glenn Springs- Pauline and the Union County Fire and Rescue Squad. Monarch firefighters stood by at Buffalo’s station in case another fire was reported in the district.

“We thank all the guys with the departments who came out; they did a real good job,” Gardin said.
