According to the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office, Janice Carol Williams, 38, of Vernon Foster Road died at 6:33 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. She was a front seat passenger in a 1998 Toyota that was struck head-on in a wreck on I-26 that occurred around 5:20 a.m. The driver of the car, Katherine E. Lanier, 40, of 306 West Hillcrest Ave., Union, was injured in the crash.
Lance Cpl. Jeff Gaskin of the South Carolina Highway said the driver of the other vehicle involved in the accident, Traci L. Freeman, 34, of 925 Wesley Court, was charged with one count of felony driving under the influence causing death and one count of felony driving under the influence causing great bodily injury.
Gaskin said Ms. Freeman, who was driving a 1999 Chevrolet mini van, was traveling west in the eastbound lane near Landrum at mile marker 2 when the crash occurred. Gaskin said she was wearing a seatbelt and was transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Gaskin said Ms. Williams was the only person in the Toyota who was not wearing a seatbelt. He said she was not thrown from the vehicle.
Ms. Lanier and the other two passengers in her car, who are children, also were taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. One child in the right rear seat was flown by helicopter to the hospital and Ms. Lanier and the other child were taken by ambulance.
Ms. Lanier has been released from the hospital. The names of he children and their condition was not released.
