Kristofer Devonte Fleming, 17, of 6314 N. Pinnacle Drive, Spartanburg, was charged Tuesday by the Union Public Safety Department with second-degree lynching and first-degree burglary.
Two other people, a 15-year-old boy and Jeremiah Antoine Sims, 21, of 117 Riverbrock Drive, Gaffney, also have been arrested in both cases and face the same charges.
One of the victims, 47-year-old Saul Talley, told Cpl. Dell Mitchell he was on Spring Street around 3:50 a.m. when three men jumped him and one struck him in the back with his fist. He was able to describe his attackers, including that one had something shiny on his teeth. An investigation into the case is continuing.
The other victim, 84-year-old George Means, told Mitchell he was in bed at his home on Simmons Street around 5:25 a.m. when he heard a bump at his front door. He said three men came in to his bedroom and began throwing bricks at him. He said he covered his head with a pillow. The men identified themselves as police and said he was under arrest. He was able to describe two of his attackers — one was tall and skinny and had shiny metal teeth and the other was short and wore glasses.
EMS was called for Means after he told officers he was hurting in his chest where he had been struck by a brick.
Means said $50 was taken from his wallet and a pair of shoes and a hammer also were missing.
Child neglect
Christin Lynn Prince, 21, of 104 Baber St., was charged Tuesday by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with unlawful conduct toward a child.
A report said a narcotics officer was contacted by the Department of Social Services on Aug. 6 after proper medication could not be obtained for Ms. Prince’s 5-year-old child. The officer learned that the child had prescriptions for Adderall and Clonidine that were picked up by her mother at CVS on July 22. The child had been removed from her mother’s custody on July 21.
When DSS asked about obtaining the medication for the girl, they received conflicting stories about its whereabouts. The prescription for Clonidine later was taken to DSS by Prince but she said she could not find the prescription for Adderall. DSS has been unable to get the proper care and medicine for the child because the pharmacy can’t refill the medication until a specific amount of time has passed. This placed the child at unreasonable harm and medical risk, the report said.
Man arrested again
A teen-ager given a probationary sentence in court last week has been arrested again.
Chad Allen Phillips, 18, who has addresses on 127 Toney Road, Union, and 670 Indian Mound Road, Laurens, was charged Tuesday by the Union Public Safety Department with driving under suspension, operating an uninsured vehicle, a seat belt violation and failure to surrender a suspended vehicle tag.
A report said Sgt. Kevin Powers was on routine patrol when he saw a 1997 Honda traveling south on the Meansville Road. He noticed that a passenger in the car, a 15-year-old boy, did not have his seat belt on. Powers got behind the vehicle, which turned into Fox Fire Apartments. Powers ran the license plate through 911 dispatch and it came back suspended.
Powers stopped the car. Phillips and the passenger got out. Phillips asked what the problem was and Powers told him the passenger had no seat belt and plate was suspended. Powers checked Phillips’ driver’s license and it also was suspended. Powers also found the vehicle had no insurance.
Phillips was taken to jail. The boy was turned over to his mother.
On Aug. 5, Phillips pleaded guilty to distribution of cocaine and resisting arrest. He was given a youthful offender’s division sentence not to exceed six years, suspended to 18 months of probation.
Thefts
A break-in was discovered Tuesday morning at Gene’s One Stop on 870 Jonesville Highway. A worker told Cpl. Roger Hill that the bar was closed down around 10 p.m. When he came in the next morning, the door had been kicked in. Someone took a green Arthur State Bank bag containing $278, a cabinet containing an undetermined amount of prepaid phone cards, around $100 in rolled quarters and around $100 from the phone card machine. Damage to the door was estimated at $400.
An investigation is continuing.
On 421 Sardis Road, a victim told Deputy Russell Roark that someone took four new pair of pants, five shirts and 30 pair of new shoes from his car. These are worth $1,114.
