Though some touch-up work remains to be done, Union County’s two newest schools are complete and ready for the start of the new school year, officials say.
The Union County Board of School Trustees met Monday in the media center of the new Jonesville Elementary/Middle K-8 School. It was the board’s first meeting in the new school and trustees toured part of the building, visiting several classrooms. The school’s furniture is already in place and teaching materials have been moved in.
Located at the intersection of U.S. 176 and New Hope Church Road, the school is the successor to Jonesville Elementary and Jonesville Middle Schools. It is one of two new schools built by the district, the other being the new Sims Middle School on U.S. 176 south of Union. The new Sims is the successor to Sims Junior High and Excelsior Middle schools.
Construction of the new schools has been overseen by the M.B. Kahn architectural firm. It’s project director, Craig Bohlen, told the board Monday that the construction of the buildings is complete. Bohlen said all that remains is minor touch-up work that should be completed by the start of school.
Superintendent Dr. David Eubanks said the board’s next meeting will be held at Sims Middle School. He said that while the clean-up and touch-up work at Sims is slightly behind Jonesville’s, the school’s furniture is already in place and teaching materials will be delivered later this week. He said both schools will be ready for students, teachers and faculty when classes begin on Aug. 17.
