A fire that destroyed a two-story storage building behind an East Main Street home early Wednesday morning has been labeled as suspicious in nature.

Firefighters were called to the structure on 1009 East Main around 12:40 a.m. A power line was arcing and fell to the ground as firefighters were working. The building was a total loss. Capt. Tony Gregory, City of Union fire commander, said the building was not connected to electricity and the blaze appeared to have begun in a back corner. A neighbor told firefighters the family who lives in the house and who owned the storage building are in the process of moving.

The blaze was a cause for alarm because initially it was reported that a chemical plant on nearby Mabry Street was on fire.

Southside and Monarch fire departments were called out to assist the City of Union.
